As a tip, we always recommend that people keep two working keys for their Ford Explorer especially from the years 1998 and up. We know that most people will use only one key to their car, and from our experience the key that is used the most will get worn out. What is great about a Ford Explorer is that you can program a duplicate key yourself without using a locksmith company or dealership, and will most likely save you money.
For security reasons, Ford asks you to keep two working keys to be able to program a third key yourself.

This is how to make a duplicate key yourself:
If you have two working keys and the key that you are using the most is getting worn out, you can take the key that is in a better condition and copy it. However, before you can copy this key, you will need to buy a transponder chip key blank. You can purchase these key blanks at a Ford dealership, at a locksmith company, online, or at Ace Hardware. Some of the online sites we recommend you check is ebay.com, amazon.com, ikeyless.com or keylessride.com. After you receive the key blank, take the your old key that is in the best condition and get it copied to the new key blank at either a locksmith store or a hardware store. We recommend Ace Hardware. When you get your new transponder key cut, this is how you program it to your Ford Explorer:

Insert your old working key to the ignition cylinder and turn the ignition cylinder to the ON position and then turn it right back to the OFF position and remove the key.
Within 5 seconds insert your second old working key to the ignition and turn it to the ON position and right back OFF, again remove the key.
Insert the new key within 5 seconds and turn it to the ON position and turn it right back OFF. The security theft light will light up for 3 seconds telling you that the new key has been programmed.

If you have lost your Ford Explorer key and have no spare, where you can get a new key made, and for how much, depends on the year of your SUV.

If your Ford Explorer was made in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, or 1997 then you have just a regular key. Most likely the only place you will be able to make a key is with a locksmith company. The reason is, is because the Ford dealership only keeps key information for ten years. A locksmith will have other tools to make you a key, such as Ford try out keys or they can just disassemble one of you car locks, such as your door locks, glove box lock, trunk lock, etc., to get the information.
If your Ford Explorer was made in the years 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 or 2003, then most likely your Ford Explorer will require a transponder chip key. If you have lost the key and have no spare, you will have to use a locksmith company because of the same reasons explained above. This time, besides making the key, the locksmith will have to also program the key to your SUV’s immobilizer.

If your Ford Explorer was made in the years 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 or 2016 then there are two places you can have your key made. The first place will be a Ford dealership and the second place will be a mobile locksmith. If you have lost the key and have no spare, a quicker way to have your key made is by using a mobile locksmith. The reason is, is because the mobile locksmith will come to you wherever you Ford Explorer is, when a Ford dealership will ask you to come to them.
If your Ford Explorer was made in the years between 2011 and 2013, you can have a key fob made to your SUV. The key fob is not a must, you can still have just a regular transponder chip key without a fob. The key fob is basically the same key as the transponder chip key. The only difference between the key fob and transponder chip key, is that the key fob will have push buttons on the key head to lock and unlock your Ford Explorer doors.

Besides your key to your Ford Explorer, you can add a remote. If your Ford Explorer was made in the years 1993 to 2010 then you can program a keyless entry remote yourself. Making a key copy will not work to fix the problem. We recommend you contact a Ford dealership or locksmith and ask them to make you a new key either by VIN number or key code. The second problem is that one of the parts inside the ignition cylinder has gotten stuck. The fix we recommend for this problem is to call a locksmith and ask them to rekey your ignition.
